It’s difficult when writing to make your character original, but if you make them a cliche people just get bored. Sure, having one or two cliche characters isn’t a problem, and sometimes can be used to good advantage. It’s when you have a lot, or the most cliched of the cliched, that the trouble starts. Here is a short list of some of the overused character types, and some tips on how to make them less formulaic.
